Site and Land Reclamation
Beneficial Reuse Programs
Site Reclamation
In 2009 PBCo teamed with First Energy, Maryland Environmental Restoration Group (MERG) and CW Hetzer to deconstruct The R. Paul Smith monofil and settling ponds in West Virginia. PBCo shipped the ash from the monofil to nearby cement makers in West Virginia and Maryland. The coal ash is a sustainable beneficial alternative to native clays or imported bauxite in the manufacture of portland cement. PBCo has shipped over 3 million tons of ash and has completed the first clean closure by removal of a coal combustion product impoundment in West Virginia.
PBCo has also commenced deconstruction of a 5 million cubic yard, partially covered dry stack ash monofil in Maryland. This project was championed by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and is a first in approving the deconstruction and closure by removal for beneficial use.
Further to its site remediation work, PBCo is recognized as a qualified bidder by Dominion Energy, Southern Energy, Georgia Power, First Energy and GenOn in a nationwide initiative to clean and close by beneficial use coal combustion byproduct impoundments.
More recently, PBCo has partnered with heavy civil construction contractors, minority owned large scale dredging and mining contractors as well as coal industry materials handling experts offering specialized, very efficient separation and drying equipment. Together, the group offers unprecedented production and efficiency in the closure or remediation of CCP impoundments, settling ponds and coal yards. In most cases with a target beneficial use application of 200,000 to 500,000 tons / year.
Mine Reclamation
PBCO offers a variety of solution for mine reclamation. Whether it is an underground mine or surface mine, PBCO can provide materials that are easily delivered and placed to create an efficient low cost alternative to land owners. In recent years, mine reclamation has been a priority for federal and state authorities in order to address environmental and structural safety concerns. This is mainly due to compromised watershed’s, subsidence of un-reclaimed sub-surface mines and high-wall mining collapse due to lack of reclamation. PBCO and its partners offer solutions that are recognized by most state agencies and mine operators in removing potential hazards and addressing reclamation which creates land mass for future use.
Environmental Remediation
As a company that specializes in beneficial reuse, PBCO provides superior solutions for environmental remediation. While removing from either surface impoundments or material generated from operating coal fired power plants, PBCO offers a unique array of end users that utilize these contaminants as a form of raw feed for a variety of products. While complying with a host of regulatory requirements, PBCO offers solutions that mitigate the environmental risks to the generator and designated manufacturer.
